NH Business Finance Authority Announces Support for Local Meat Processing Facility

Partnership between NH BFA and Claremont Savings Bank keeps operations local and ensures sustainability for area farms.

December 12, 2022 – The BFA is pleased to announce that it has helped finance the acquisition of PT Farms by Montshire Packaging in North Haverhill, New Hampshire. The new owners will continue its operations for local farmers who have depended on their essential and high-quality meat processing services.

In recent years PT Farms added a USDA-inspected processing plant and began processing beef for numerous local farms, becoming a critical part of the local agricultural economy. The future of the PT Farms facility became uncertain following the unexpected passing of co-founder Pete Roy in February 2022.  Via the partnership between NH BFA and Claremont Savings Bank, PT Farms has now been purchased by Mark Boyden of Boyden Farm and will be rebranded as Montshire Packaging. PT Farms was a family-owned and operated business that focused on supporting the needs of local farmers, and it will remain that way under new ownership.

“Agriculture is an important industry in New Hampshire,” stated James Key-Wallace, Executive Director of the BFA.  “Our farms support our economy and supply us with healthy food.  Farmers invest tremendous resources in growing a healthy herd, only to find there are no processing facilities available to prepare the product for sale. This threatens our food supply and the livelihood of our local farms. We are proud to work with Boyden Farm and Claremont Savings Bank to keep Montshire Packaging under local control, so that it can continue to support the local farms we all depend on to keep our New Hampshire way of life intact.”

Consumers are increasing demand for raised locally animals, including those fed with specialized organic feed. Demand for grass-fed and free-range meats is also growing, as a renewed focus on healthy eating finds a happy marriage with a superior-tasting meal. The New England region is home to many of these kinds of farms, all of which depend on having the product processed for the market at a local facility.

“Boyden Farm has been run by five generations of Boydens,” stated Mark Boyden owner of Boyden Farm.  “We produce and sell high-end, grass-fed beef products using sustainable farming practices. Acquiring Montshire Packaging to safeguard the processing of Boyden Farm beef and is critical to the survival our farm, and many farms across the Granite State.  We are grateful to Claremont Savings Bank and the New Hampshire Business Finance Authority for helping us purchase PT Farm.  Without this facility, many local farms would have serious doubts about their futures.”
