NASHUA, NH — A major remediation and redevelopment effort is moving forward at the former Mohawk Tannery EPA Superfund site in Nashua, advancing the transformation of a long-contaminated property into a new residential community.
The Business Finance Authority (BFA), in partnership with the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, provided a $4,000,000 loan to support the remediation of the approximately 40-acre site. The financing supports a $31 million remediation and acquisition effort being undertaken by Blaylock Holdings, LLC. The project would not be possible without the contributions of other partners, including the EPA, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, the City of Nashua, and Thorndike Development.
The former Mohawk Tannery operated from 1924 to 1984, leaving contaminated residues adjacent to the Nashua River. Cleanup efforts will permanently contain approximately 56,000 cubic yards of contaminated material within a secure containment system designed to withstand a 500-year flood event, under the oversight of the EPA and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.
“This investment reflects the BFA’s commitment to projects that deliver meaningful public benefit,” said James Key-Wallace, Executive Director of the BFA. “By closing the financing gap for remediation, we’re protecting the Nashua River while enabling the creation of much-needed housing and long-term economic value for the community.”
Following remediation, the site will be redeveloped into an estimated 546-unit residential community, including condominiums to be developed by Thorndike Development Corporation and rental apartments by a separate developer. The project is expected to support 100–200 construction jobs and generate lasting economic benefits for Nashua.
